12/31/2023 0 Comments Hillside strangler victims![]() What’s apparently not up for debate, however, is Bianchi’s own starring role in these crimes. Bianchi is such a habitually deceptive and untrustworthy figure that this four-part affair raises at least some uncertainty about Buono’s guilt-a notion exacerbated by the late revelation that, to this day, Bianchi continues to change his story. Still, via interviews with police officers, attorney generals, defense lawyers, journalists and more, Danner’s series contends that the only real, verifiable link between Buono and the Hillside Strangler victims was Bianchi’s word-and that was so unreliable that even the judge admitted, in court, that the defendant was a chronic liar. At the end of what would be the longest criminal trial in United States history, a jury found him culpable of nine of the 10 Los Angeles murders. ![]() ![]() If there’s a mystery to The Hillside Strangler: Devil in Disguise, it’s whether Buono had anything to do with the murders in question. This fit detectives’ theory that the Hillside Strangler hadn’t acted alone, and ultimately resulted in Bianchi pleading guilty and testifying against Buono. crimes with his cousin Buono, a car upholsterer with whom he lived and ran a fledgling escort service. When that scheme fell apart, he pivoted to claiming that he had committed the L.A. Ralph Allison, one of Bianchi’s original interrogators who appears in a new interview. Bianchi’s intention was to avoid the death penalty with an insanity plea, and yet in the footage on display in The Hillside Strangler: Devil in Disguise, his ruse is so clearly nonsense that it’s amazing anyone ever bought it-including Dr. In those black-and-white videotaped chats, Bianchi denies being the Hillside Strangler while simultaneously attempting to convince doctors that he has multiple personality disorder, and that a different identity-named Steve Walker-was actually responsible for the killings. How an Angry Mom Took Down the Revenge-Porn King ![]() It was obvious that a serial madman was on the loose, and according to detectives Bob Grogan and Pete Finnigan, law enforcement soon came to believe that because of certain pieces of evidence (such as the fact that the women’s bodies were dumped in a manner that could only be accomplished by more than one individual), they were looking for a pair who were posing as figures of authority (say, police officers) in order to convince their prey to go along with them. Yolanda Washington was the first to be found in October 1977, followed by Judith Miller one month later, Lissa Kastin five days after Miller, and two young girls-Dolores Cepeda and Sonja Johnson-a week after that. 2), however, is the suggestion that one of the two fiends might not have had anything to do with the crimes.īefore it casts doubt on its tale’s outcome, The Hillside Strangler: Devil in Disguise revisits its initial, horrifying stages, beginning with Sheryl Kellison, who as a 17-year-old in 1976 began dating the 24-year-old Bianchi, whom she describes as “just nice and, for me, that was enough.” Shortly after they got together, the area was gripped by fear courtesy of a collection of dead women who turned up in the local hillsides. The twist of director Alexa Danner’s four-part Peacock docuseries (Aug. Accused of killing 10 women in the Los Angeles area-as well as two others in Bellingham, Washington, that were attributed solely to Bianchi-the cousins terrorized the West Coast via a string of sexual assaults and fatal strangulations. Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono are the exception to that rule, at least according to the American criminal justice system and The Hillside Strangler: Devil in Disguise, which details the case made against both men in the late 1970s. Since serial killers are generally driven by singular, deviant compulsions, it’s rare for them to work with accomplices. They don’t know how to make people look young on this show, they really don’t. This song (plus her styling) makes her seem about 35, when she should really be showing us how she’s going to be a bankable 16-year-old pop star. Malaya Watson: “Through The Fire” by Chaka Khan Anyway, this duet is boring, and they don’t even do the spoken-word parts. Now think about how afraid of black people the world must have been for the record company executives to choose “The Girl Is Mine” as the first single. ![]() Think of literally every other song on Thriller. Fun fact: This wet scoop of tuna salad is actually the first single from Thriller. The first is Sam and Alex taking on Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson’s “The Girl Is Mine,” which they actually manage to make less interesting. Oh, also, since Fox apparently has no half-hour shows to feature in a post- Idol slot, this will take two full hours, and the extra time will once again be eaten up with duets. This song is not so much a smart choice for Dexter as it is the only choice his brand of mall country didn’t have its first big crossover hits until the ’90s, and “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” is just twangy and homespun enough. The judges say a lot of words, and after they are finished, I am no closer to understanding whether they did or did not like the performance.ĭexter Roberts: “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” by the Georgia Satellites Also she is dressed in a way that would make 1995 Gwen Stefani say, “Yo, dial that down a little bit.” It is neither rock nor roll, and I do not love it. ![]() She’s like Tori Amos’s troublemaking kid sister Rachel Amos. Jena starts this song in the slowed-down piano arrangement it absolutely does not ask for. Jena Irene: “I Love Rock & Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts One of them is going to win, and I honestly don’t know if any of them deserve to. And the choice to score the montage to Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” really highlights the problem: None of these people is remotely hungry (or feral). The show begins with an endless montage of the top eight reacting to last week’s save of Sam Woolf, followed by each one saying their name and asserting that they are the next American Idol. Tonight, they give us the ’80s by way of the dreariest of the mope-rock ’90s and the coffeehouse aughts. Well! I should not have underestimated the season 13 top eight’s ability to suck the joy right out of everything. From the start, I’m dreading the Day-Glo. And American Idol never met a theme it couldn’t get utterly wrong. ![]() Eighties throwbacks tend to misunderstand the decade it always gets re-imagined as a nonstop parade of peppy synths and kicky topknots, when the reality was much more complex. Agriculture’s not for wimps! We weather the ups and downs.ĭo all trees produce sap? Yes, but it’s the sugar maple that has the highest content of sugar in the sap. What happens when it’s not the right temperature? Well, some seasons are good, some aren’t. You need cold nights to make “sugarers” happy, so unseasonably warm winters aren’t good for the harvest. As spring nears, the sap thaws and the sugar in the sap rises up the tree. Before winter, the maple trees store starch in their trunks and roots, which gets converted into sugar. Nighttime temperatures must drop below freezing (in the 20s), and daytime temperatures must reach 40 to 50 degrees. Maple trees are tapped when temperatures alternate between freezing and thawing.
